This poem was written by me for a poem writing competition held in my college. The topic given was HIV AIDS and we were told to let our imaginations run wild. So this was what my few hours of brooding led to.
The day had dawned,
As any other would
She met me
But quiet she stood
She had something to say
But wouldn't let it out
Staring silently though
I knew she wanted to shout
Finally she gave in
And spilled the beans
There came to an end
A wonderful dream
I had known her all along
And knew her to be impulsive
But never had I expected her
to say
Prerna, I'm HIV positive.
Taken aback,
I heard myself gasp
I threw my arms around her
And refused to loosen my clasp
Trying to be strong
I told her it will be alright
In this battle
Alongside we will fight
She withdrew not believing
I had accepted her
For a long time
She did not stir
Then came the tears
That so long fought to stay put
She told me I’ll get it too
To stay away as much as I could
I chided her,
Said there was nothing to fear
Hugs and kisses wouldn't give
me HIV
That I always wanted her near
That time she knew
The struggle had come to an end
She had defeated the disease
And won a friend.
This is a message to one and
all
Against HIV let us all stand tall
Ensure the needles you use
are clean
'Cause let me tell you HIV can be really mean
It will make you regret and
curb your freedom
So have safe sex and use a
condom
